WTNH interviewed Tom Barger, Water Quality & Treatment Manager, to discuss what we are doing to prevent crisis like the one occurring in Flint, Michigan. At the RWA there’s a high level of testing done everyday, from the source of the water, to all of its stops along the way, right up to someone’s tap, specifically looking for certain contaminants like lead and copper.

(Oct. 13, 2015) – Larry Bingaman, president and CEO of the South Central Connecticut Regional Water Authority (RWA), announced that the RWA was recently honored with Association of Metropolitan Water Agencies’ (AMWA) Platinum Award for Utility Excellence. This award, combined with the company’s Utility of the Year Award presented last month by the New England Water Works Association (NEWWA), amplifies the RWA’s emphasis on sustainable decision making, reinforcing its higher purpose: to ensure the New Haven region is well-positioned to maintain its excellent water supply and use it as a source of growth, opportunity and vitality for the region’s stakeholders.

Everyday we work diligently to deliver clean tap water and to protect our watershed for both water quality and improved quality of life for our customers. The criteria for the Platinum Award for Utility Excellence is based on the Ten Attributes of Effective Utility Management and the Keys to Management Success. Applicants are expected to show progress in implementing the attributes and keys, as well as a distinctive level of management expertise and expanded utility achievement. Three years after winning a Gold Award, member utilities are eligible to apply for the Platinum Award for Utility Excellence. Past winners of AMWA's Platinum Award for Sustained Competitiveness Achievement are also eligible to apply.

Beginning at noon on the New Haven Green, community members can take the “Value of Water Pledge” that demonstrates a commitment to drinking tap water. Mayor Toni Harp will present a proclamation and offer her remarks at 2:30 p.m., with the event ending at 3 p.m.
