Recreation Frequently Asked QuestionsYou can fish from opening day until November 30. The hiking portion of this permit will allow you and your guests to hike, jog, or walk all year long. Bicycling is permitted at our Genesee and Maltby areas from April 15 through December 31. Cross-country skiing is also allowed, weather permitting.
Our recreation program has opened five lakes for fishing: the three Maltby Lakes; Lake Saltonstall; and Lake Chamberlain.
Yes, a state fishing license is needed to fish any fresh water lake, pond or stream in Connecticut.
Do you have boats available for rent, if so, how many?Yes, we have boats and electric motors available at Lake Saltonstall on a first-come, first-served basis from opening day until the end of August.
Yes, you may bring an electric motor. Gasoline engines are not permitted.
We have eight areas open for hiking in the towns of Madison/Killingworth; Guilford; Northford; East Haven/Branford; West Haven/Orange; Woodbridge; and Bethany. When you purchase an annual permit, you will be supplied with maps to all these areas.
Pets are not allowed on our property.
You may bring something to drink and snack on but no picnics are allowed. Carry out what you carry in.
Are the trail areas patrolled?Yes, our trail areas are patrolled by our Police Department seven days a week. Most parking lots are locked.
When you purchase an annual permit, you are given the combination number. This combination opens all of the recreation parking areas.
A complete packet of information is included with your paid permit. Each recreation area will have a map of its trail system and available fishing areas. Along with each packet are the Rules and Regulations.
Do you have handicap accessible trails or fishing areas?We have handicap accessible trails at Lake Chamberlain and a wheelchair accessible fishing dock at Lake Saltonstall.
We do not allow hunting on our property but adjacent landowners do. We suggest you stay away from wearing white or woodland colors. Wear bright colored or fluorescent orange clothing during hunting season. It could be a vest or ballcap to make yourself more visible.
